Are You Climbing the Right Mountain?
Most people spend years climbing.
Climbing the career ladder.
Climbing toward financial success.
Climbing for recognition.
Climbing because that’s what we’ve always been told to do.
But here’s a question that very few people stop to ask:
What if you’re climbing the wrong mountain?
I’ve met people who have built successful businesses, earned a great income, and achieved goals they once dreamed about. Yet many quietly admit something surprising…
“I still feel like something is missing.”
Success isn’t the same as fulfillment.
One of the biggest ideas from The Second Mountain is that life often has two different journeys.
The first mountain is about achievement.
The second mountain is about meaning.
The first asks:
“What can I accomplish?”
The second asks:
“Who do I want to become?”
That’s a completely different question.
Sometimes it takes a setback to ask it.
The loss of a loved one.
A health scare.
Burnout.
Retirement.
Or simply waking up one morning and realizing you’ve been so busy chasing success that you’ve forgotten to ask why.
I know that feeling.
When my brother passed away from cancer, it forced me to stop and take an honest look at my own life. I wasn’t taking care of my health the way I should have been. That painful season became the turning point that led me to walk, reflect, and ultimately become a Personal Performance Coach.
Looking back, I wasn’t just changing habits.
I was climbing a different mountain.
Today, when I coach people, I rarely begin by asking about their goals.
Instead, I ask them to know where they stand.
Because until you’re honest about where you are, it’s impossible to know where you should be going.
Maybe your next level isn’t earning more.
Maybe it’s improving your health.
Maybe it’s rebuilding a relationship.
Maybe it’s finding purpose again.
Or maybe it’s discovering that your greatest contribution is still ahead of you.
The best years of your life aren’t determined by your age.
They’re determined by the mountain you choose to climb next.
Your Stand Challenge This Week
Take ten quiet minutes and ask yourself these three questions:
What mountain am I climbing today?
Why am I climbing it?
If nothing changed over the next five years, would I be proud of where this path leads?
Sometimes one honest answer can change the direction of your entire life.
Because before you take your next step…
Know where you Stand
